A federal judge ordered the immediate release of Kilmar Abrego García from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody after ruling that his detention was unlawful.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has not confirmed the release, but multiple news outlets report that U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, sitting in Maryland, determined that federal authorities lacked a lawful basis to keep García in detention because no final removal order existed.
García, a Salvadoran national and longtime resident of Maryland, was released from an ICE facility in Pennsylvania Thursday afternoon after Judge Xinis granted his habeas corpus petition. His attorney confirmed the release occurred shortly before 5 p.m. ET.
Sherrone Moore, the now former head football coach at the University of Michigan, was fired and taken into police custody amid an ongoing investigation into an alleged assault. Moore was dismissed by Michigan on Dec. 10 after an internal investigation found “credible evidence” he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
Hours later, police detained Moore following a 911 call to investigate an alleged assault and stalking incident at a residence in Pittsfield Township.
Authorities confirmed Moore was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail and remains in custody as the investigation continues. Officials said the case is under review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, with an arraignment scheduled for Dec. 12.
